Current studies show that Peyronie's disease (plastic induration of the penis) is an inflammatory disease of the penis where the elastic layer (tuncia albuginea) of the penis in the central tissue (corpora cavernosa) suffers an injury. Consequently, the affected area loses elasticity and when filled with blood, it does not stretch, rather it causes the penis to curve in the direction of the scar. Peyronie’s disease is the most common cause of excessive curvature of the penis.

The process begins with the oxidation of various fats and protein molecules that lead to inflammation of the elastic layer and the cavernous body. This continues until finally collagen fibers are replaced with non-elastic fibers that form the characteristic fibrous plaque (hardened nodules) of this disease.

If the curvature persists in the later stages of the disease, when pain has diminished, it is necessary to resort to surgery for correction.
